![]() Seriously, someone go find some goddamn paper towels because there are chunks of brain matter all over the floor. It's another beautiful emotional book from an author who seems to put so much heart into everything she creates.ĭon’t mind me, just sitting here, MIND BLOWN by this book. The truth is art will never be as effortless as it used to be, not now that people have expectations of me. It makes me sad to think this quote from Anna might reflect Hoang's own feelings: And from an audience, when you've gained a certain amount of popularity. From family and friends, when it comes to caregiving. ![]() From society, to perform a socially acceptable role. It's also, I think, about the burden of expectations. And the book is also about depression and anxiety, how they can make you feel immobilised, and the long journey of fighting against these illnesses. Nobody should feel too ashamed to ask for help when they need it. A lot of caregivers find themselves struggling and unable to cope, though they feel too guilty to ask for help. It's also about caregiving for someone who is terminally ill, and I really appreciate the discussion Hoang has opened with this. It is about a woman being diagnosed with ASD later in life and beginning to make sense of everything she had previously struggled to mask. One thing Hoang continues to excel at is writing sexy romances where neither of the protagonists are assholes.Īs I said, though, there's a lot more than romance going on here. Anna and Quan are so lovely (I think “I’ll wear rainbows out with you" is the most romantic thing I've ever heard a guy say), so kind, their vulnerabilities so real, yet the chemistry between them sizzles off the page. There's a lot going on in this book a lot more than a romance, though that is done excellently too. For another, I felt completely immersed in this story, pulled so entirely into Anna and Quan's world, their feelings and experiences seeming so real. For one thing, The Heart Principle is written in first person, not third like her other books, which I generally prefer for romance anyway. This is a big claim, but it genuinely might be my favourite romance novel ever.Īs always, Hoang's author's note explains her personal reasons for writing this kind of story, but I suspected early on that the raw emotions the book explores, and the sad places it goes to, were inspired by her own experiences. The Heart Principle was everything I wanted, and so much more. I gave The Kiss Quotient and The Bride Test five stars, so now I need a sixth star to emphasise how Hoang's latest book was my absolute favourite. How much of what people say is genuine and how much is politeness? Is anyone really living their life or are we all reading lines from a giant script written by other people? Anna and Quan have to fight for their chance at love, but to do that, they also have to fight for themselves. However, when tragedy strikes Anna’s family she takes on a role that she is ill-suited for, until the burden of expectations threatens to destroy her. ![]() Their first attempt at a one-night stand fails, as does their second, and their third, because being with Quan is more than sex-he accepts Anna on an unconditional level that she herself has just started to understand. That’s where tattooed, motorcycle-riding Quan Diep comes in. The more unacceptable the men, the better. Translation: She’s going to embark on a string of one-night stands. And when her longtime boyfriend announces he wants an open relationship before making a final commitment, a hurt and angry Anna decides that if he wants an open relationship, then she does, too. When violinist Anna Sun accidentally achieves career success with a viral YouTube video, she finds herself incapacitated and burned out from her attempts to replicate that moment. A woman struggling with burnout learns to embrace the unexpected-and the man she enlists to help her-in this new New York Times bestselling romance by Helen Hoang. ![]()

Doesn't hurt your ears to listen to like the violin and doesn't sound too low and dark as the bass sometimes can. It's so emotive and has a beautiful range that can be low and rich and also reaches relatively high melodies. The deep soulful voice of the cello just melts me. I like cello songs like pavane, ode to joy. Bringing a cello places make it more convenient but it it is worth it. I started with violin, but then I realized that the violin is not the instrument for me. It is my first year leaning a string instrument. And they are sometimes called "the key of the orchestra." They do not sound unstable like band instruments, but I feel like you can control Cellos throughly. Bass is too big, viola and violin are too small. There aren't many violinists left in today's world which is a pity for this instrument is definitely the most beautiful sounding when played properly.Ħ Cello The cello or violoncello is a bowed or plucked string instrument with four strings tuned in perfect fifths.Ĭellos are perfect for tall people like me. One of the most challenging instruments to be played which is what makes it so much more satisfying to play. My vote will forever go out to the violin and its family. ![]() The violin is so historical and one of the most important instruments in music. Violins are by far the most lovely string instruments and the most lovely instruments in general! I'm surprised that guitar has surpassed violin, wow! The violin and its family has this vibe to it- this elegant, refined, beautiful vibe that no other group of string instruments can ever compete with. There is just no other instrument quite like it for the soloist, and it is truly the greatest stringed instrument of all time. ![]() It takes much more practice to coax beautiful music on the violin, but a worthy pursuit to be sure. There are now far more guitar players than there are violin players, probably because guitar is much easier to play as a beginner. The ONLY reason guitar has the top spot is because it is now more popular than violin.and also more accessible. All in all, I would say that the violin is the best because of the expressions, and tones of the violin. Expressing emotions and such are very easy to do on the violin, as the force of the bow, the position you are in, and the way you finger the strings (harmonics, pizzicato, etc.) can very easily change the feel of a certain piece of music. Even out of the string instruments, I would say that it is the best because it has a rich, smooth sound and a little uniqueness that just makes it the best. The violin is the best instrument because it has a way of expressing music like no other instrument can. It is the smallest and highest-pitched instrument in the family in regular use. I highly suggest this instrument for to any musician, young or old.ģ Violin The violin is a wooden string instrument in the violin family. It's a great beginner instrument and is one the main reasons that I'm now trying to learn all of the common string instuments. The sounds and styles varry so much, even the styles. Not only string instrument, but guitar is undoubtedly the king of all the musical instruments! It provides the peace of mind like no other it's easy to use and with its great variety it can make any kind of om classical to rock and roll to hip hop! It represents the word 'music'. Oh and I love VIOLIN and GUITAR! Fortunately, I play guitar. But if you are playing another instrument, keep on playing it because it won't be fun if the whole world played guitar. But I PLAY CLASSICAL GUITAR! I'm a beginner and I think that guitar could take the place of any other musical instrument. However, every single instrument has its own sound and music. Because when you love it it will love you and you will make a wonderful duet. There is such a wide range of what you can play on guitar from the calm acoustics of Johnny Cash to the orgasm-inducing sounds of The White Stripes to the dirty grunge of Nirvana to the sophisticated riffs of Franz Ferdinand and Pink Floyd. Rockies fans saw this firsthand with the ‘super bullpen’ trio of Wade Davis, Jake McGee and Bryan Shaw. ![]() The Rockies issued a two-year extension for Daniel Bard shortly before the 2022 trade deadline, which suggests the club did not, and will not, skimp on well-compensated relievers in an environment where late-inning success is particularly essential (no matter the projected win-loss record).īullpen signings can be volatile. This was not his job, as the opportunities went to Bard most often, but a lack of conversion in opportunities he did receive sent a message for what his role would be - and perhaps for the Rockies to assemble a separate bullpen contract. The final impression lifted Colomé’s season ERA to a 5.74, and there was little success to speak of with respect to the $4.1 million he was paid.Ĭolomé completed the season with four saves in seven total opportunities. That month-by-month ERA would dip to a 4.19 in July, 18.00 in August, and 19.64 in September. This pushed Colomé’s season ERA to a 2.13 at that point, and the Rockies were suddenly looking at a legitimate replacement for the injured Kinley.Ĭolomé posted a 1.38 ERA in the month of June (13 IP). He didn’t allow an earned run in 11 of his first 16 outings of the year, which was slightly below league average, but from May 16 through June 18, he would allow just one earned run in 17 consecutive appearances. This, for understandable reasons, took high-leverage opportunities away from other Rockies relievers.Ĭolomé’s body of work was limited to just 15 1⁄ 3 innings through the first two months of the season, but May (2.08 ERA, 8 2⁄ 3 IP) was far better than April (5.40 ERA, 6 2⁄ 3 IP). May, June DominationĪfter one month of the regular season, Tyler Kinley and Daniel Bard were the clear frontrunners for high-leverage work.Īrizona middle reliever Joe Mantiply was named a 2022 All-Star, which suggested that Kinley (if not for injury) and Bard (if numbers were ‘slightly’ better) could have been selections themselves. A two-pitch mix of fastballs and cutters served as a contrast to other arms in the Rockies bullpen, and with so much money committed to the veteran, it wouldn’t make sense to give up on him early. The first impression wasn’t strong, but there were glimpses of dominant performance. Damage was limited to one run, and his three innings to follow would be scoreless, but a tough end to April would push his ERA above five. ![]() The Dodgers posted four hits on Colomé that night, cutting his Rockies debut to just 2⁄ 3 of an inning. (Hey, high-leverage work should be deliberate at times, after all.) It was there that his “deliberate” pitching style was on full display, working at a far slower pace than most arms. Early StrugglesĬolomé’s first outing of the year came on April 9 against the Dodgers. That role did not stand upon Opening Day – and it remained that way through the 2022 season. FanGraphs’ depth charts went as far as placing Colomé in the closer spot just hours after his signing. Spring training was suddenly a proving ground for 33-year-old Colomé and then-36-year-old Bard, both in consideration for the ninth-inning relief role. The signing of Colomé created some high-leverage options for the Rockies bullpen (which was only furthered with a dominant Tyler Kinley early in the year). Then came the Rockies, jumping in at $4.1 million for a one-year deal, giving Colomé nearly as much money as eventual closer Bard in 2022 ($4.4 million). The Twins declined Colomé’s $5.5 million mutual option for 2022, instead buying him out for $1.25 million and leaving the veteran right-hander to test the free agent market. The Road To SigningĪfter pitching a lights-out 2020 with the Chicago White Sox (22 1⁄ 3 IP, 0.81 ERA), Colomé joined the Minnesota Twins in 2021 where he posted a 4.15 ERA in 65 innings. Daniel Bard and Alex Colomé were the seventh- and eighth-highest-paid Rockies in 2022, but the performance of one was far different than the near-All-Star showing of the other. Two Colorado relievers were issued more than $4 million in contracts for 2022 alone. The end of 2022 was a far cry from the roster battle that existed at Salt River Fields, however. We had a closer competition in spring training. We’ll begin with the player with the lowest rWAR and end up with the player with the highest. Prior to 1650, Stobart asserts, the grocery trade was a vibrant and widespread entity, which supplied imported goods to customers well before Jan de Vries classic ‘industrious revolution’ period. Sugar, tobacco, spices and dried fruit became items of central importance to the grocery trade. During the 16th and 17th century, specialized London grocers were increasingly able to supply their provincial counterparts with new, non-perishable goods. Even in the 15th century large provincial grocers could supply their customers with a range of spices. Significant to Stobart’s investigation, however, is the way in which grocers obtained supplies of imported foodstuffs. Yet the existence of such Guilds and Companies alludes to a greater degree of definition than grocers could claim in the late middle ages and early modern period. Generally selling in gross, by 1373 such sellers had formed a new guild – the Company of Grossers. In its early history, the Pepperers’ Guild (chartered in 1180) controlled and managed vendors who sold a range of spices and confectionary. In his first chapter Stobart outlines the development of the grocery trade prior to 1650. In his engaging analysis Stobart shows the multiple meanings that goods such as sugar and spice simultaneously claimed. By focusing on supply chains, selling practices and consumer behaviours, Stobart demonstrates how contemporary ideas of empire and trade complicated the categorization of ‘luxury’ goods. ![]() Secondly, and perhaps in reaction to the historiographical responsibility given to imported foodstuffs, Stobart asks: what were the everyday practicalities of selling, buying and consuming such goods? Less a business history, than a history of consumption, Stobart’s focus on processes allows him to reassess the usefulness of frameworks concerned with novelty, luxury and utility. In assessing these historiographical trends Stobart seeks to question whether groceries can bear such a heavy explanatory load. It also recognizes that historians have understood that the consumption of these goods transformed many aspects of British cultural and social life, from meal times to gender identity. First, it notes how historians have primarily linked the trade in novel food goods to the rise of Britain as a commercial and imperial power. Sugar and Spice focuses upon two main research questions. By focusing upon the particular in the global, Stobart convincingly reasserts the need for more studies which explore the localised processes that lie at the heart of global trade. Stobart tells a global story through a particular lens, in order to demonstrate how the supply of goods such as tobacco, tea, coffee and chocolate shaped the retail practices and spaces of early modern Britain. Rather than the diner or drinker, however, Stobart largely focuses on the people from which contemporaries purchased such goods – the grocers whose increasingly complicated supply networks allowed them to sell a range of imported goods to an ever-widening group of consumers. It is these ‘new’ imported products that form the primary focus of Jon Stobart’s Sugar and Spice: Grocers and Groceries in Provincial England, 1650–1830. Women sipped tea in parlours and drawing rooms, while men walked out to coffee houses, taking snuff as they strode, before returning home later to enjoy a dinner of savoury dishes and sweet delicacies laced with sugar and spice. During the long 18th century imported foodstuffs came to play a central role in the everyday experiences of British people. ![]() ![]() ![]() There are numerous examples of covers in this respect.
